Does anybody know where I can find information on how a patent can be granted earlier prior art dates when it is an extension or modification of a previous patent?

A patent that I have a license for is inolved with this issue, and before I sink more money into it I wanted to make sure that the earliest prior art date is defendable.

HELP PLEASE
